Gravestone Stories

Explore Alexandria’s hidden history through its extraordinary cemeteries. Created by public historian David Heiby—Vice President of the Virginia Trust for Historic Preservation, which owns and operates the Lee-Fendall House—Gravestone Stories offers expert-led tours, interactive maps, and original research uncovering more than 250 years of local and national history. Many who lived in or owned the Lee-Fendall House are buried in Alexandria’s cemeteries, and their stories are now brought to life through this unique public history project.

Emma Rowland

Emma Rowland is the seamstress behind all of the dresses on display around the Lee-Fendall House. Her grandmother taught her to sew when she was eight, and she fell in love with historical fashion in college. Emma is a tour guide in Old Town Alexandria and does volunteer work at the Lee-Fendall House as well. She has given multiple lectures on fashion history throughout the DMV area and has made historic costume commissions for a variety of organizations. Emma has found that making (and wearing) historic clothing brings the past to life in a tangible and personal way. Fashion history is history, after all.
